Brian Laudrup: Van Bronckhorst could bench Morelos for Sakala v Sparta Prague
Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be in charge of Rangers for the first time on Thursday, and Brian Laudrup reckons he could make a major change.
The Bears were dumped out of the League Cup semi-final by Hibernian on Sunday, and after Alfredo Morelos struggled, the former Light Blues hero has told the Daily Mail the new manager could be tempted to hand Fashion Sakala a chance in the starting XI going forward.
Rangers host Sparta Prague and will need to win to keep their chances of securing a place in the Europa League last-32 alive.
Laudrup said: “For years now, there has been regular talk of where Morelos might go after Rangers, of how much his transfer fee might be. But here’s the thing.
“What are you thinking if you are a sporting director at a club in England, France, Spain or Germany and you’re looking at Morelos? He’s not scoring in Europe, he’s not playing well and he doesn’t look interested. It is not a combination to make anyone reach for their chequebook.
“If Morelos wants to move, he isn’t going to find an attractive new club unless he gets his form sorted out. Can Van Bronckhorst wake up Morelos? Is that even possible at this stage of the season? Yes, a new manager can have an impact but it has to come from within Morelos first of all. It’s been too long now since we saw the striker that was exceptional in the 2019-20 Europa League.
“Van Bronckhorst might be tempted to put him on the bench for a bit and give Fashion Sakala a more consistent run. It’s been difficult for Sakala, coming to a new club but not getting a chance to properly settle as Gerrard had him in and out of the team.”
Morelos’ poor form has cost Rangers a lot this season, and while Steven Gerrard stuck with him in his line-up, GvB could have other plans.
The Colombian was unavailable when the club needed him most for the Champions League qualifiers, and he has struggled to produce the goods in the Europa League group stages.
Morelos was not at his best at the weekend, and he did very little to suggest he wanted to win the game.
With Sakala often looking hungry whenever he is given a chance, could the new boss be making a big call in the coming days?
Morelos has always played like someone who knows he will start the next game no matter how he performs, and that has not helped Rangers.
A defeat on Thursday could all but end their European campaign for the season despite one more group game to play, and van Bronckhorst has to start his Ibrox reign on an impressive note.
Making some big calls could be necessary.
