Tom English blasts Rangers defence after 3-1 loss v Hibernian
Rangers were dumped out of the League Cup on Sunday, with Hibernian running out 3-1 winners in the semi-finals, and Tom English has blasted their defence.
Hibs found themselves 3-0 up through Martin Boyle’s hat-trick 38 minutes into the second half, and while Scott Arfield pulled one back for the Bears five minutes before half-time, it was too little, too late.
The Rangers defence was all over the place in the opening minutes of the clash, and English could not believe his eyes, taking to his personal Twitter account to share exactly how he felt about what he was seeing.
The BBC Scotland’s chief sports writer said: “At Hampden. I can’t quite believe what I’m seeing, Boyle and [Kevin] Nisbet absolutely running rings around this awful Rangers defence.
“Arfield with a goal that reminds us that the favourites still have a pulse. Incredible stuff.”
Giovanni van Bronckhorst was unable to get his work permit in time to take his place in the Rangers dugout for the game, and he had to watch from the stands.
The new manager would not have been pleased with what he saw from his players, and he would have seen the huge task that is clearly ahead of him.
Steven Gerrard’s sudden departure could be blamed by some for the woeful performance, but this team would not have fared much if the new Aston Villa boss was still at Ibrox.
They have failed to produce a top-level performance on a consistent basis this term, and Hibs exposed their flaws again.
Van Bronckhorst has to find a way to get this Rangers team firing on all cylinders again, and he does not have a lot of time on his hands.
Retaining the Premiership title is the target, but they need to do a lot of work to keep Celtic and others away from pipping them to it.
