Michael Owen: Steven Gerrard delighted to be back in Premier League

Michael Owen claims that Steven Gerrard told him that he was really proud about his Rangers stint after leaving to take over the Aston Villa job.

Gerrard decided to unceremoniously leave Ibrox to take over the reins at Villa Park earlier this month.

Sacking Dean Smith led the Premier League club to look for a new man to take charge and the then Gers manager accepted the offer.

Speaking about his move on Optus Sport, Owen said, “He’s delighted to be back in the Premier League. I spoke to him earlier in the week. He’s really proud of what he did at Rangers.

“He’s excited to be back with his family and really got the bit between his teeth. Fantastic start.”

Great work

No Rangers fan can hate Gerrard for the job he did at Ibrox and will forever be grateful for how he got them back to the summit of Scottish football.

However, they knew that he would one day leave the club but did not expect it to be midway through a season.

That said, one can understand his reasons for leaving for Villa as it’s the Premier League and he does fancy the Liverpool job.

After Jurgen Klopp leaves, if he’s done a good enough job at Villa Park then he will certainly be in the reckoning for the Anfield hot seat.

It remains to be seen how he fares there but we believe that he could make them a prominent top half side.

The onus is now on Giovanni van Bronckhorst to take over from what Gerrard started and make this team an all conquering force once again.
