James Tavernier: GvB didn’t want to disrupt team ahead of Hibs clash

Rangers skipper James Tavernier has suggested that Giovanni van Bronckhorst didn’t want to disrupt the team ahead of Sunday’s Scottish League Cup semi-final against Hibernian.

Van Bronckhorst has been appointed as the Rangers boss earlier this week, subject to a work permit, and Ibrox sporting director Ross Wilson confirmed at the time of unveiling that he won’t be in charge of the team for the game against Hibs.

However, the Dutchman is expected to be in the stands to watch the crucial game at Hampden Park.

“The new gaffer didn’t want to disrupt the team ahead of Sunday. That is really respectful of him. I’m looking forward to having a great chat with him on Monday,” said Tavernier, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“I have been in constant dialogue with Ross who has kept me updated throughout. I’m really excited and looking forward to this new chapter.”

Steven Gerrard did an incredible job at Rangers, and Tavernier has rightly suggested that his departure to Aston Villa is a natural event in football.

However, the club have made a wise decision to bring back their former player in the managerial role.

He won’t be in the dugout for Sunday’s game. Instead, it will be a coalition headed up by B team boss David McCallum and including first-team striker Jermain Defoe, who will take charge.

The Rangers skipper has rightly suggested that it’s a “respectful” decision from the new manager. Amid all the turmoil, the club have prepared for this game normally, and there hasn’t been too much of a change in training.

Barry Ferguson has suggested that Gio won’t make drastic changes at the club. He will want to stamp his own authority, but it will be a seamless transition, and he will make gradual changes.
