Rangers may have to wait until January to appoint Jean-Paul van Gastel

Rangers may have to wait until January to add Jean-Paul van Gastel to their backroom staff, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reports that Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants his former Feyenoord and Guangzhou assistant to join his new coaching team at Ibrox.

Van Gastel became the manager at Guangzhou after van Bronckhorst and Rangers would have to reach an agreement to release him from his contract at the Chinese club early if they don’t want to wait until January.

First setback for Gio?

It’s unfortunate that van Bronckhorst might have to wait until January to be able to hire van Gastel, who worked alongside him at Feyenoord.

However, it is understood that Roy Makaay is going to be coming to Glasgow with van Bronckhorst and may even be sat in the stands with him at Hampden Park on Sunday for the League Cup semi-final versus Hibernian.

Van Gastel was kind of thrown into the manager’s job at Guangzhou in China after van Bronckhorst left amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since being made manager, van Gastel has taken charge of 15 matches, winning five of them and drawing six.

He’s had a very average record at the Chinese club but again, it was never his intention to go to China to be their manager.

According to transfermarkt, the ex-Feyenoord coach is expected to be the Guangzhou manager just until the end of the year.

And that would make it very simple for Rangers to hire him if that’s when his contract at the Chinese club expires.

In other Rangers news, this senior player may be frozen out by van Bronckhorst now he’s arrived at Ibrox.
