BBC journalist makes Gio-Gerrard comparison after Rangers appointment
Rangers appointed Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their new manager yesterday but the Dutchman won’t be in the dugout against Hibernian on Sunday.
Kevin Anderson of BBC has taken to Twitter to share his reaction. He feels it is a lovely set up, hinting that the decision to appoint the Dutchman was correct.
The 46-year-old replaced Steven Gerrard who left the club to join Aston Villa a week ago.
Anderson has suggested that Bronckhorst had a “better career” than Gerrard, and that he was an “accomplished” player.
He wrote: “Van Bronckhorst had a better career than Gerrard. More experience at the top level. A more accomplished player. A lovely step up for Rangers.”
Ticks many boxes
It is indeed a very good appointment for Rangers.
Gerrard did a brilliant job at the club. He arrested the gradual decline, and over a span of three years, made Rangers the best team in the country.
Both Gerrard and Gio were different kinds of players, and it’s unfair to compare as well. Gerrard spent nearly all his life at Liverpool and carried the burden of the team on his shoulders for a long period of time.
He was the captain of the England national team, and played with great pride and passion. Van Bronckhorst played for various clubs and won trophies.
In terms of managerial calibre, Van Bronckhorst has more experience at the top level. The appointment of Gerrard was a gamble, one that paid off.
Under Gio, Feyenoord won their first Eredivisie in 18 years. He won two Dutch Cups and two Super Cups as well. He favours a 4-3-3 system and it represents a continuation of the good work done by Gerrard.
He is a former Rangers player and knows the culture of the club. He understands the pressure and the demand of the job. Perfect appointment.
In other Rangers news, this senior player may be frozen out by van Bronckhorst now he’s arrived at Ibrox.
