Simon Jordan questions Rangers ambition with GvB appointment
Rangers are reportedly close to appointing Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their next manager, although nothing has been confirmed yet.
Following Steven Gerrard’s departure, the Gers have spoken to a host of candidates, but van Bronckhorst emerged as their first-choice option.
Simon Jordan, who generally speaks a lot of sense, has questioned the appointment of the Dutchman on talkSPORT today.

He says that he is not “overwhelmed” by the appointment, citing Gio’s poor record in China. However, he did acknowledge that the 46-year-old did well at Feyenoord.
Jordan has further added that the biggest beneficiary of Steven Gerrard’s department has been Celtic.
“I don’t want to say that I’m underwhelmed because it would be unfair to say. Obviously, his record in Eredivisie was quite substantial, with a 60% win record, but then, most of the top sides in the Eredivisie have a 60% win record,” he said on talkSPORT.
“So, I don’t know what it tells about Rangers’ ambition. Obviously, they are going for someone they know as a player. I would always maintain the difference between a player and a manager is quite significant.
“I am not overwhelmed by it. The biggest beneficiary of Gerrard’s departure will be Celtic.”
Harsh
We can agree with Jordan’s comment that being a great player doesn’t translate into being a great manager, and that applies to Van Bronckhorst.
Going by that logic, Rangers should not have appointed Gerrard in the first place. He had no previous managerial experience, and he has now made them a top team in Scotland.

Gio will have a solid foundation already, and using his managerial experience he can gradually build on that to make Rangers even better.
It doesn’t smack of a populist approach, rather it’s a calculated risk that makes a lot of sense.
We can fairly guess why Jordan is so bitter about the entire appointment saga. He and other talkSPORT pundits have been rooting for Frank Lampard for this job for the past week.
And now that the former England midfielder hasn’t been considered for this role, they are throwing negative criticism towards the Dutchman, even making a bizarre claim on Celtic.
