Alan Brazil: Ally McCoist was angry by Gerrard leaving Rangers

Ally McCoist was furious when Steven Gerrard left Rangers to take over the reins at Aston Villa, claims Alan Brazil.

Brazil, who is a close friend of the former Gers striker and manager, has stated that he did not want to have a go at Gerrard, but he was visibly not happy with the way things had transpired.

While McCoist had previously said that his exit had left a “bad taste” [Scottish Sun], it seems that this development at Ibrox affected him much more than that.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Thursday morning, Brazil said, “I did phone McCoist up, but he didn’t speak to me as his voice is gone again shouting ‘penalty’.

“People laughed at me when I said he could take the Newcastle job, Steven.

“And the way he has left, on a serious note, I listened to Ally, carefully, and I could tell Ally was angry the way he left, the way it was done.

“But he didn’t really want to have a go at Steven.”

Few saw it coming

There was a feeling post the Newcastle vacancy that every available Premier League job is going to see Gerrard linked with it.

Anyone who’s followed his playing career and the way he talks about Liverpool knows that he would love the opportunity of an Anfield return.

He has gone down in history as one of the best players to wear the Liverpool red and returning as manager could be the perfect turn in his managerial career.

However, with Jurgen Klopp clearly doing a phenomenal job there, Gerrard knows he needs to impress at a smaller Premier League side first before taking that job.

There was a chance that even Newcastle could have proven to be a tempting option for him.

We’re sure that he’ll do well at Villa Park but it is now very important for Ross Wilson and co. to nail the next appointment and get him over the line as soon as possible.
