Gabby Agbonlahor: Aston Villa don’t want to sign any Rangers players

Gabby Agbonlahor is adamant that Steve Gerrard will not return to Ibrox and raid the Rangers squad after leaving for Aston Villa last week.

Rangers are currently searching for a new manager after Gerrard left the club for Villa last week, and that has sparked speculation that he will take a few of their stars with him to the Premier League.

Villa’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League, Agbonlahor, told talkSPORT [17/11/21] that he has spoken to Gerrard about his move back to England.

“I was lucky enough to speak to him a few days ago and he said he’s all in, he said he wants to give the best for Aston Villa, and he’s really excited for the challenge,” Agbonlahor said.

Agbonlahor was then asked by host Laura Woods which Rangers players Gerrard would look to sign for Villa.

“None of them,” he replied. “I like [Ryan] Kent, I like [Alfredo] Morelos, but I feel like Steven Gerrard now has a bigger level of player he can buy. At Rangers, he only had a certain amount of money.

“Look at the money they have spent, they made three £30million signings in the summer. He has the whole world he can go for.”

Aston Villa only after the elite?

Agbonlahor seems convinced that his old club are only after the premium talents, suggesting that no Rangers star is worthy of pursuing.

In one sense, he may have a point – Villa bought the likes of Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia, all of whom would walk into the Gers starting XI.

However, the ex-England striker might have made an oversight in some areas of the pitch.

Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo would surely oust Marvelous Nakamba for a midfield role while Nathan Patterson or James Tavernier would give Matty Cash a run for his money at right-back.

Rangers supporters will be happy to hear Agbonlahor’s comments, though, even if they disagree with the basis around it.

Bears will be loathed to lose more people to Villa after they decimated the coaching staff with Gerrard bringing a number of his backroom staff with him to Birmingham.

Gerrard will almost certainly be in the market for new signings in January, and Bears will be braced for any bids coming their way.

Hopefully, Agbonlahor is right on this one.

In other Rangers news, this giant Spanish club are plotting a January bid to sign this international Ibrox ace amid a stunning claim.
