Barry Ferguson not set to become Rangers assistant manager

Rangers are expected to appoint Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their next manager, and plans are underway for his backroom staff too.

Daily Record has claimed a Scotsman could be part of the Dutchman’s coaching crew, and while some have linked Barry Ferguson with a return to Ibrox as an assistant manager, Heart & Hand Podcast owner David Edgar insists that is not the case.

Edgar, the leader of Rangers’ official media partner, the Heart & Hand Podcast, posted the information on their official account on Tuesday night.

“The Barry Ferguson as assistant rumour is categorically untrue, according to the club,” he said via the Heart & Hand Podcast Twitter handle.

Not happening

It is expected that many would have thrown their names in the hat to join Van Bronckhorst’s backroom staff, but it does not seem Ferguson, 43, will be returning to Rangers in a coaching capacity anytime soon.

The incoming boss is most likely to be keen to rely on the local knowledge of at least one Scottish member of staff, and there is no doubt that the former Bears star would have been a fine candidate.

The manager of Scottish League One side Alloa Athletic has some experience, but Van Bronckhorst appears to be looking elsewhere.

He will definitely be bringing familiar faces with him to Ibrox when appointing his staff, and an official deal is expected to be wrapped up within the coming hours or days.

Given that Heart & Hand get the information directly from Rangers as one of their partners, they are definitely right on this one, and another name will likely be thrown up by the media soon.
