Rangers hold Frank Lampard talks, three-man candidate list drawn up

Frank Lampard has spoken to Rangers about the vacant managerial job but is unlikely to be under any serious consideration for it, according to the Daily Record.

The 43-year-old ex-England international has been out of work since he was relieved of his duties as Chelsea head coach in January 2021.

He has recently been linked to Norwich but the Premier League strugglers appointed Dean Smith on Monday [15/11/21].

Speculation has been mounting that Lampard could succeed his old England teammate Steven Gerrard at Ibrox after he left for Aston Villa last week.

However, that appears fanciful now given the Daily Record’s Tuesday morning update.

They wrote: “Record Sport understands Rangers held brief talks with the Englishman but they appear to have decided on three candidates – none of which are Lampard.”

Rangers

No-go for Lampard

It seems that Rangers did lend some consideration to the idea of Lampard as their next manager, but ultimately, it was never an idea that would be made a reality.

As one of England’s finest footballers of his generation, who also played for West Ham, Swansea City, Manchester City and New York City, and someone who has managed top talents at Chelsea, it would have been remiss of Rangers not to at least have a conversation with Lampard, especially as he is not currently tied to a club.

He has a lot more experience than Gerrard did when he was handed the Gers job in 2018.

But the club are in a totally different position now and thus their expectations have changed.

A more experienced candidate with a history of silverware is now likely to be favoured, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst seemingly the clear frontrunner.

The names of the other two candidates are less obvious, however, and it will be interesting to hear who those two are.

The likes of Derek McInnes and Kjetil Knutsen have been previously mentioned.

In other Rangers news, Richard Keys has predicted fan fume after this big-name boss spoke out over the Ibrox job.
