Kris Boyd: Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson is justifying Alan Hutton comparisons
Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson was in outstanding form during Scotland’s 2-0 win over Moldova on Friday, scoring once and assisting another.
The victory ensured Steve Clarke’s men clinched a World Cup play-off place with a game to spare, and Patterson has been praised by Kris Boyd.
The Sky Sports pundit has compared the 19-year-old with Alan Hutton, tipping the Rangers academy graduate to follow in the footsteps of the legendary full-back.
Boyd told The Scottish Sun: “There’s no doubt that Rangers have a fight on their hands to keep Patterson. There will be some serious interest from England. He’s been terrific for his club and he’s now doing it for his country.
“Patterson had that Covid issue earlier this year when he got into some trouble off the pitch. But since then, he has really grown in stature and matured. It’s incredible to think he’s still only 20.
“Patterson played like a man in a boy’s body against Moldova as he once again underlined his huge potential.”
Absolutely
Patterson opened his account for Scotland in style before assisting Che Adams’ goal, and definitely proved why the likes of Everton were interested in recruiting his services last summer.
With Steven Gerrard gone, the youngster could be keen to follow suit, and the next Rangers boss has a lot of work to do to convince most of these players to remain at Ibrox.
They surely cannot keep hold of someone like Patterson for long as he has the potential to cost suitors down south a Scottish transfer record.
He still has a lot of development ahead of him, but he is on the right track, and his number of suitors would surely have increased by now.
Playing in the Premier League remains the ultimate dream for most players in the Premiership, and Patterson is likely to move on sooner or later.
Should Scotland book a place in the World Cup, the Rangers star could see his value skyrocket if he impresses for his country at the tournament next year.
