Steven Davis responds to Giovanni van Bronckhorst-Rangers question in Sky Sports video

Steven Davis skirted around the name of Giovanni van Bronckhorst when asked about his potential appointment as the next Rangers manager.

The 46-year-old Dutchman is being touted as the frontrunner to succeed Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, leading a Sky Sports journalist to broach Davis about the subject.

In a video shared on the Sky Sports website, the unnamed journalist asked: “I know van Bronckhorst’s representatives have said they’ve held positive talks with Rangers this week, what would you think of that if he comes in, I assume you know him, and on a personal level what kind of guy is he?”

Davis, 36, replied: “I can’t really, to be honest, comment on speculation in terms of who is coming in or not because in all honesty, I don’t know the answer.

“But what I do know is I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ross Wilson as well and he will be very diligent in terms of the work he does and trying to make the right appointment and as I say, whoever does come in has a very good squad of players and characters there to work with and hopefully we can go on to have a successful season once again.”

Tight-lipped

It’s no real surprise to hear Davis remain cautious as Rangers continue their search for Gerrard’s replacement.

A senior player who has seen it all in the game, Davis knows better than to nail his colours to the mast and potentially end up red-faced.

Instead, Davis and his teammates will sit back and hope that an appointment is made before the end of next week so that the new manager has time to work with the squad ahead of their League Cup semi-final clash against Hibernian at Ibrox next Sunday.

It looks increasingly likely to be van Bronckhorst, but names like Frank Lampard are still appearing in reports and thus nothing can be ruled out at this stage.

Davis is placing his faith in Wilson to bring in a capable successor to Gerrard and, as a dependable member of the dressing room, who is anyone to argue with the Northern Ireland legend.

In other Rangers news, a new ‘Favourite’ has emerged in the club’s manager hunt as this Champions League icon is on course for Ibrox.
