Peter Martin: Some at Rangers were delighted with Steven Gerrard exit

Rangers fans still cannot believe that Steven Gerrard left Ibrox for Aston Villa last Thursday, but it appears some at the club were pleased with the manager’s exit.

According to Peter Martin, not everybody at the Premiership giants felt disappointed with the development, and the 41-year-old actually left with no emotional goodbye to the assembled squad.

Gerrard clearly could not have pleased all and sundry at Rangers during his stay, but he leaves a solid legacy behind after last term’s colossal achievement.

Rangers

Martin told PLZ Soccer: “I am told that within the corridors of power at Ibrox, there wasn’t the level of tears and despair shown by some fans who couldn’t believe he would do such a thing to a club the size of Rangers for the minnows of Aston Villa.

“In fact, I am led to believe some people were happy to see the back of him, but you won’t hear that word spoken for a long time until someone within the boardroom decides to lift the lid on Gerrard’s three-and-a-half year reign in Glasgow.”

As expected

The Villa manager would have ruffled some feathers at Ibrox given his type of personality, and hearing that some felt relieved when he left is not a surprise.

Nevertheless, the majority clearly would have preferred to hold on to him until the end of the season if they had their way.

There is a lot at stake at the club right now after their financial account for last season was published, and they simply cannot afford to miss out on the title with £40million on the line.

Rangers

A lot of people at Rangers would have fancied their chances of automatically booking a place in the group stages of next season Champions League with Gerrard still in the dugout.

That is far from guaranteed right now regardless of who succeeds him, and the club will be worried as they look to get in a perfect replacement.

The Liverpool icon will go down in history as a Bears hero, and fans will definitely continue to appreciate him for stopping Celtic from getting 10-in-a-row done.

In other Rangers news, the Bears are plotting January swoop for teenage striking sensation, five PL clubs in pursuit too.
