Peter Martin can’t see Derek McInnes returning to Rangers

Peter Martin doesn’t believe that Rangers will try and appoint Derek McInnes to replace Steven Gerrard after he turned them down before.

The former Gers player was linked with the managerial job in 2017, but he decided to stay at Aberdeen, and Martin thinks that rejection will harm his chances of getting the role at Ibrox [Scottish Sun].

Gerrard’s move to Aston Villa was completed on Thursday, and now the search for the next manager begins, but Martin can’t see McInnes being in contention.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer, he said: “I think a lot of Rangers fans, maybe even members of the board will look and say ‘no, no. The train doesn’t stop twice with regards to the Rangers job’.

“He knocked them back, and the way the whole thing unfolded wasn’t too good.”

A fair and clear point from Martin.

When the Gers approached McInnes, they weren’t in the position of strength they are in now.

However, he is someone who has vast experience in the SPFL and has had relative success with Aberdeen.

You could certainly argue that he would be a safe pair of hands for the Bears to help see them through this season and to win the league.

However, that rejection could certainly be held against him and could see the Bears decide to move for other candidates instead.

Hopefully, the Gers don’t wait too long to appoint the man they want, and they act swiftly enough so that the players have some time to work with the new man ahead of the game next weekend.

However, we agree with Martin that McInnes could be unlikely.
