Official Rangers partner hits out at Daily Record story linking Giovanni van Bronckhorst with Ibrox

David Edgar has hit out at the Daily Record for their supposed exclusive linking Giovanni van Bronckhorst with the Rangers manager’s job.

Steven Gerrard left Ibrox to join Aston Villa on Thursday morning and speculation about van Bronckhorst wanting to join the Gers had already emerged beforehand.

However, on Thursday night, Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson reported an exclusive that said van Bronckhorst “is ready and willing to become the new boss at Ibrox”.

Heart & Hand Podcast founder Edgar, who’s an official media partner of the Light Blues, took a swipe at that story by Jackson.

In the story, it’s also mentioned that Derek McInnes is in the frame but Edgar isn’t having that either.

“Jackson trying to punt his pal McInnes into the Rangers job. He had his chance. It’s not 2017 anymore,” he said via the Heart & Hand Twitter account that he operates.

“But I’m glad the Record ‘exclusively’ revealed Gio is a contender.

“First we’ve all heard about that, eh?”

More than just the Gio stuff

It wasn’t exclusive to the Daily Record that Gio’s interested in the job at Rangers – other sites had reported that quite regularly beforehand.

However, there are bits of information in there that are new, such as the line that the Rangers board have discussed the possibility of hiring the former Feyenoord and Guangzhou City manager and that McInnes is a “genuine” contender.

We’re not telling anyone to believe this, by the way. But there are bones to pick with the Daily Record and in this case, there’s not really much to complain about.

Edgar is likely to be finding more faults in the Daily Record after the Heart & Hand Podcast was vilified by the newspaper earlier this season for historic tweets by certain members.

That’s fair enough but we can’t really have an issue with a journalist just putting a story out there when we cannot say for certain that his information true or false.
