Jermain Defoe set to stay on to complement new Rangers manager

Michael Beale and Gary McAllister were two high-profile Rangers backroom staff exits, with Jermain Defore staying put at the Ibrox.

According to The Athletic, the likes of Beale, McAllister, technical coach Tom Culshaw, head of performance Jordan Milsom and first-team analyst Scott Mason left with Steven Gerrard to join Aston Villa.

Defoe, along with goalkeeping coach Colin Stewart, player-coach Jermain Defoe, doctor Mark Waller, lead performance coach Craig Flannigan and strength and conditioning coach Paraskevas Polychronopoulos, as well as two other analysts, Graeme Stevenson and Seb Dunn, have all stayed on.

Bitter sweet

Beale was certainly a fan favourite and many would’ve loved for him to take over from Gerrard had he wanted the job.

However, that did not seem to materialise and he decided to continue his working relationship with the now Villa manager and move south of the border.

McAllister was another efficient member of the backroom team at the Ibrox and his departure will certainly be a bitter pill to swallow.

However, it’s good to see Defoe staying put and giving some semblance of a stable staff for the new manager.

Rangers

Whoever it is, he is going to get a half-decent staff and will be getting his own coaches so Gerrard’s absence will not be felt to a greater extent.

Hopefully, the board make the right choice as this team is good enough not just to retain the league but also to go on a run in Europe.

In other Rangers news, the club have made initial contact with a fan favourite to replace Gerrard and it’s believed he’s very keen on the job.
