Steven Gerrard will be interested in Aston Villa talks if Rangers grant permission

Steven Gerrard will be interested in talks with Aston Villa if Rangers grant permission for them to take place, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that Villa’s billionaire owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Eden have been wowed by the job Gerrard has done at Ibrox and a “formal approach” will be made.

Gerrard’s understood to be the Premier League club’s number one target to replace Dean Smith, who was sacked on Sunday.

If Gerrard does decide to quit Rangers in order to join Aston Villa, the Daily Mail claims that assistants Tommy Culshaw and Gary McAllister, first-team coach Michael Beale and head of performance Jordan Milsom “would likely follow him”.

Worrying

Rangers fans, including ourselves, have banged the drum of Gerrard to stay, dismissing the possibility of him taking a step away from silverware and European football to manage in a Premier League relegation battle.

However, there are reasons why Villa would appeal to Gerrard too.

As it says on the Daily Mail website, he would be significantly closer to his Merseyside-based family and that would mean he can spend more time with them.

It would also mean that he earns more money and is likely to get increased exposure to Liverpool, which is bound to be his dream job once Jurgen Klopp moves on from Anfield.

Gerrard’s proven himself in Scotland, turning the tides in the Old Firm and bringing glory back to Ibrox after the darkest of decades.

That should already impress a lot of clubs but if he wants to further improve his CV, doing well at Villa Park could also help boost his portfolio for when a vacancy arises at Liverpool.
