David Edgar moots Rangers and Aston Villa ‘waiting game’ over Steven Gerrard

Heart & Hand Podcast owner David Edgar does not see Steven Gerrard quitting his role at Rangers to be the next Aston Villa manager.

Dean Smith was sacked by the Villans on Sunday and Gerrard has since emerged as their number one target to replace him.

According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League club will make an approach to hire the Liverpool legend as their new manager and he’d be interested in listening to their offer.

Edgar, who’s the leader of Rangers’ official media partner the Heart & Hand Podcast, has ruled out the possibility of Gerrard moving on but admits that time will tell whether he’s right.

“I don’t see SG going to Villa but only he will know if it’s of interest to him,” he said via the Heart & Hand Podcast Twitter account.

“Waiting game for us all!”

Please, stay

If Gerrard does want a job in the Premier League, we would urge him to wait until the end of the season first.

He led us to the Premiership title last season without suffering defeat and for a second time in a row, led the Gers to the last-16 of the Europa League.

If he goes in the next week or so, we worry that we won’t be able to get someone in to do the job and see out title number 56 or lead us to a strong showing in post-Christmas European football.

However, the more we think about it, the more we think Gerrard may actually go to Villa Park if Rangers agree a compensation figure with the Premier League club.

We’ve moaned a lot this season about how the team isn’t playing as well as it was last term and Gerrard could be worried about losing the league title and being knocked out of the Europa League.

Let’s say he stays and we finish second, fail to win either of the cups and finish bottom of our Europa League group, would a club like Aston Villa want him then? Probably not.

While that’s unlikely to happen, it still could happen.

It’s a risk for Gerrard to go down south right now but it may also be a risk for him to stay.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton expects Gerrard to quit Ibrox amid an “enormous” development at the Scottish champions.
