Aston Villa to make final decision over Rangers boss Steven Gerrard within 48 hours

Rangers will find out in the next 48 hours whether Aston Villa will make an approach to hire Steven Gerrard as their new manager, according to the Daily Record.

Villa sacked Dean Smith on Sunday after five consecutive Premier League defeats and Gerrard has emerged as a target due to his previous relationship with Villa CEO Christian Purslow, which started at Liverpool.

It is understood that Gerrard’s name has been discussed behind the scenes at Villa Park and a source has told the Daily Record that a move could be made in the coming days.

“Obviously, it’s no secret Christian and Steven have a great deal of mutual respect for one another so it’s no surprise the link has been made,” the source said.

“But, at this stage, there has been no approach made to Rangers to seek permission to open talks.

“Yes, that could happen later this week but only if Steven’s name is on the shortlist and it’s likely that this list will not be finalised until Wednesday afternoon or possibly even Thursday.”

Hands off

If Villa make an approach for Gerrard, there’s only one thing that Rangers should be doing – and that’s rejecting it.

As it stands, we’re top of the Premiership table, in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals and still within a shout of qualifying for the Europa League knock-out stages for a third season in a row.

Aston Villa are in a Premier League relegation battle.

Which team would you rather manage?

Gerrard is someone who exuded loyalty during his playing career, spending almost all of it, except for a short stint at LA Galaxy, at Liverpool.

While we understand why Gerrard is constantly touted as being the next manager at Anfield, we cannot see why the Villa job would have any kind of appeal for him.

He won’t be able to achieve anything more special at Villa Park than he still can at Ibrox.

Sure, he may earn more money there but let’s face it, Gerrard is unlikely to be short of a few quid.
