Jamie Carragher discusses Steven Gerrard Rangers future amid Aston Villa links

Jamie Carragher believes that Aston Villa would be a good fit for Steven Gerrard but does not think he will leave Rangers.

The sacking of Dean Smith has led to the Birmingham outfit widening their scope for a new manager.

According to The Telegraph, they’re considering the Gers manager as a potential replacement for the Villa Park hero.

When asked about his future and the possibility of leaving the Ibrox, Carragher, someone who knows Gerrard personally, said on Sky Sports (7/11, 19:35). “I think Aston Villa as a club would be a great move for Steven Gerrard.

“But the situation he finds himself in right now is he’s taken the title off Celtic last season and he’s in a great position to win it again.

“I think in a perfect world, you want to stay at Rangers until the end of the season and come away from there with two titles.”

He could stay

Gerrard seemed very committed to the Rangers cause when talks about taking the Newcastle job surfaced.

After their Saudi-funded takeover, they’re now a super-rich club and would be willing to pay astronomical wages and sanction huge transfer fees to recruit players.

However, if he didn’t show any interest in that job, there’s a good chance he doesn’t in this one as well.

He’s built something special at the Ibrox and will not want to let that go in vain.

The support and adulation he receives from the fans may not be the same at Villa Park and things could go south pretty quickly.

However, Gerrard is an ambitious man and if he aspires to be the Liverpool manager one day then this could be the perfect stepping stone.
