Aston Villa have been tracking Steven Gerrard since 2019

Aston Villa were looking to swoop Steven Gerrard away from Rangers two years ago, according to a report in the Daily Record.

Dean Smith was at real risk of losing his job back then, but navigated through tricky waters and got his side back on track.

However, he wasn’t as lucky the second time around, and Gerrard is now understood to be in the mix to replace the Englishman at Villa Park.

Given Villa’s finances, it will be hard to turn down the job for any manager, not just Gerrard.

They’re a big club historically and a manager with the right vision could see them get back on track and compete with the elite.

It’s something similar that Gerrard did at Rangers which is why their interest in him makes complete sense.

The Gers boss is an ambitious one and knows that he can take the Ibrox giants only so far.

They do not have the kind of finances some of the Premier League sides do and if he is to go on and build a solid team, then a move south of the border makes a lot of sense.

He also may want the Liverpool job some time in the future so the Villa role could be the perfect audition for the Anfield hot seat.

It would also acquaint him with life in the Premier League and he could feel that the time is right to consider his Ibrox exit.

A fan favourite, Gerrard will desperately be missed by the Gers faithful should he part ways with the club.
