Derek McInnes suggests Rangers could demand big transfer fee for Nathan Patterson

Derek McInnes has suggested that Rangers could demand a high transfer fee for young talent Nathan Ferguson if he keeps on improving.

The 20-year-old right-back is considered one of the highly-rated young talents in Scotland, and he has already made five appearances for his country.

Peter MacDonald, the former St Johnstone and Dundee striker, who coached Patterson for a spell when he worked with the club’s Under-15 side claimed last month Patterson is an “exciting” prospect.

Rangers

McInnes has suggested that Rangers should develop him at the club, and sell him at a premium price when the time is right.

Celtic sold Kieran Tierney to Arsenal for a fee of £25 million back in the summer of 2019, and McInnes has suggested that Rangers should eye such figures.

The BBC pundit told The Scottish Mail: “Rangers knocked back a bid from Everton earlier this season and are in control of that situation.

“From a business point of view it makes sense to develop him. If they see him as a future mainstay you could potentially be talking the sort of money Celtic got for Tierney from Arsenal.”

Bang on

During the summer transfer window, Everton made an attempt to sign the youngster, but the Gers knocked back their approach.

It has been reported recently that several Premier League clubs are still keeping an eye on him, but Steven Gerrard appears to be pretty relaxed about his situation.

Patterson has made only one Premiership start this season, and he could feature when Rangers face Ross County on Sunday.

James Tavernier is the club’s first-choice defender, but Patterson is doing just fine to provide strong competition for the right-back spot.

McInnes is absolutely spot on here. Rangers should look to keep him at the club for a few more years. He must first establish himself as a first-team regular.

Every player has a price, and Rangers can demand a high price for him if he develops at the club. He has the potential to be a top-quality defender, and selling him now doesn’t make sense.
