Davie Provan: Celtic can run Rangers close if backed in January
Celtic are currently breathing down the neck of Rangers after a recent surge in form, and Davie Provan reckons they can challenge for the Premiership title.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have won four and drawn two of their last six league games, and that has seen them cut the gap between them and Rangers to just four points.
Steven Gerrard’s side have recorded similar results with Celtic over the last six games, but Provan believes his old side could give the defending champions a run for their money if they are well backed in the January transfer window.
The Sky Sports pundit told The Scottish Sun: “He (Postecoglou) has to be more pragmatic by recognising the limitations of his squad.
“For the moment, winning the Premiership from Rangers has to be the priority. Given proper backing in the next window, they could run Gers close.
“Playing his best striker in his favoured position would be a good start. Recently, Sir Alex Ferguson insisted you have to play your best players. Are you hearing that Ange?”
Probable?
Rangers have won just one more league game than Celtic this term despite the Hoops’ poor start, and with 26 games still left in the campaign, anything is possible.
The Bears remain favourites for the top prize, but they definitely cannot afford to rest on their laurels.
They have dropped points against Hearts and Aberdeen in recent games, and they need to learn how to put games to bed and become more consistent.
The Ibrox outfit have failed to reach the heights of last term, and while Celtic are clearly still struggling to adapt to their new boss, some quality recruitment in January could change a lot of things.
The title race could be a fierce one this season, and Steven Gerrard’s side have a lot of work to do if they want to retain it.
Nothing is guaranteed yet, but given their current financial status, Rangers surely cannot afford to miss out on the Premiership.
In other Rangers news, the Bears are plotting January swoop for teenage striking sensation, five PL clubs in pursuit too.
