Aston Villa consider Steven Gerrard, Christian Purslow knows Rangers manager well

Aston Villa have sacked Dean Smith and are considering Rangers manager Steven Gerrard as a replacement, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper reports that Southampton’s Ralph Hassenhuttl is also on Villa’s radar but Gerrard shares a strong connection with the West Midlands club’s CEO Christian Purslow after working together at Liverpool.

Gerrard’s contract at Ibrox doesn’t expire until 2024 and it is understood he’s seen as a “major asset” at the Scottish champions.

However, that hasn’t stopped him from appearing high on the shortlist of billionaire-owned Villa.

Hands off

Gerrard being linked with jobs in the Premier League isn’t something we’ll take too seriously because we’ve seen it all before.

We had it with Newcastle recently and we even saw him liked with Everton in the summer before they hired Rafa Benitez.

Liverpool is the one we’ll take seriously.

Rangers

Gerrard is obviously a legend there and there will be a day in the future when Jurgen Klopp’s days at Anfield are over.

However, those days don’t appear to be any time soon.

While the Telegraph claims that Gerrard “would need another job before being considered for” Liverpool, we’re not buying that.

He’s done what he can at Rangers to show he’s good enough to manage the club where he won the Champions League.

Would Villa be a step up from Rangers?

Well, that’s an easy question to answer. At Villa Park, there are no trophies. At Villa Park, there is no European football. At Villa Park, there’s a toxic fanbase that turns on their heroes when they get the chance to move on to bigger and better things.

Gerrard won’t want to go there, we’re sure.
