Rangers told to win the title by Barry Ferguson

Barry Ferguson has told Rangers to go out and win the SPFL title after their latest financial results were revealed.

Speaking in his column for the Daily Record, the former Gers captain called on Steven Gerrard’s men to win the title and secure the pretty much guaranteed £40million.

This is because winning the SPFL this season will secure an automatic spot in the Champions League group stage, so you can see why Ferguson is so keen on the Gers winning.

He said: “A £23.5m operating loss does not make for good reading.

“But after a year where Covid has battered not just every football club but every business, then perhaps it’s not such a surprise.

“You look at the bigger picture. What does this season bring? Very likely a £40million jackpot for whoever wins the Premiership as it looks almost certain that top spot will bring a place in the Champions League group stage.

“And that’s exactly what Rangers have to do.”

A rallying cry from Ferguson.

The former Gers man turned pundit makes a really good point here about the club’s finances.

Yes, they are in a bit of trouble, but if they can win the title and secure that Champions League group spot, the Bears will essentially wipe out all of their debts in one fell swoop.

So, it is a big gamble, and Gerrard’s squad are not running away with the league, but if it pays off, the board deserves a big round of applause.

If it doesn’t pay off and Celtic or another side win the title, then the board could look foolish and could put the club in danger.

So, if there wasn’t already an incentive to go out and win the league, then surely this is another one for the players, and it is up to them to do the business on the pitch and secure that SPFL title once more.
