Journalist mocks Jack Simpson and Rangers fan after John Souttar suggestion on Twitter

Telegraph journalist Ewan Murray has mocked Rangers over a host of perceived transfer failures over the last 10 years.

Writing below a Twitter thread as to whether the Gers may make a move for Hearts defender John Souttar in January, a Rangers fan replied to Murray that the 25-year-old is “English Championship at best” and is “not an international or a Rangers player”.

Murray gave that response short shrift on his personal Twitter profile, writing: “This is terrific. ‘Rangers player’ …You are aware of the utter [expletive] that has represented Rangers over the past decade?! Where is Jack Simpson by the way?!”

Gerrard gaffe?

Simpson signed a pre-contract agreement with Rangers on January 28 2021 before the deal was hurried and made permanent on February 1.

Signing from Bournemouth as a 24-year-old, Simpson had only made 35 appearances in senior football and had only featured 12 times for the Cherries during the 2020/21 campaign before making the move north.

The statistics did not paint a great story and there was no great excitement at his Ibrox arrival.

But, as ever, Rangers supporters were prepared to place their faith in Gerrard and hope that he could work wonders with the centre-back on the training field.

However, Simpson has made just 10 appearances in more than nine months at the club, featuring just once in their last 10 games.

That’s despite a serious injury to Filip Helander which has kept the Swedish international out since the middle of September.

Clearly, Simpson needs a move away from Ibrox, perhaps on loan initially, to see if he can find his feet in senior football.

Gerrard can then make a decision on whether Simpson has a long-term future at the club.

In other Rangers news, an ex-FIFA official has blasted this player after a major recent Ibrox controversy.
