Journalist aims thinly-veiled swipe at Rangers after £33.5m club reveal

Ewan Murray has aimed a thinly-veiled swipe at Rangers after the club issued their annual report on their official website.

Rangers posted £23.5million losses for the financial year, citing the Covid-19 pandemic as a major factor.

Reacting to this news via his personal Twitter profile, Guardian journalist Murray wrote: “Rangers confirm staff costs of £47m, including £33.5m on the first team playing squad. That’s a serious outlay to win the Scottish league and reach the last 16 of the Europe League.”

Underachieving?

Murray seems to be suggesting that Rangers should be doing a lot more on the pitch with the investment made recently.

Steven Gerrard’s side were in imperious form last season as they stopped Celtic making it 10 Scottish Premiership titles in a row last season with a remarkable league record.

However, they did not improve in Europe and they once again failed to reach the finals of the domestic cup competitions.

Murray may have a point that the Gers should be expecting to do better in the domestic cups, but making it to the last 16 of the Europa League is no mean feat given the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United were in the competition last season.

Of course, Rangers need to kick on and reach the next level, but that could be made difficult by the latest financial report.

Hopefully, there does not need to be big player sales in order to mitigate the fall out from a loss in revenue.
