Sam Allardyce suggests Steven Gerrard will not accept Newcastle job

Sam Allardyce has suggested on talkSPORT that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will not leave Ibrox to join Newcastle United.

Gerrard has been reportedly linked with a vacant managerial role at St James’ Park, although the Magpies are also considering other options.

There have been claims that Gerrard is interested in taking the job at Newcastle, but he has suggested that such speculations are “rubbish” [BBC Sport].

Now Allardyce has given his thought on the matter. The former West Ham boss is confident that Gerrard will not leave Rangers to join Newcastle.

“I don’t think Steven at this stage would leave Rangers, where they are top of the league, winning every week, to fight at the bottom of the Premier League,” said Allardyce to talkSPORT.

Gerrard at some stage of his career would want to try himself in the Premier League, but taking the Newcastle job could tarnish his reputation if things don’t go in his way.

The Premier League is exciting and Gerrard will be offered more lucrative package at Newcastle, but there’s no need for him to join the Magpies at the moment.

At Rangers, he still has a lot of work to do. First of all, winning the SPFL title for the second time would be a massive achievement.

Gerrard will be looking to do well in the domestic cup competitions as well this term.

Next summer, Rangers need to undertake a massive squad rebuilding process, and Gerrard should be aiming to add more quality players to the club.

The Liverpool legend should also aim to do well in European competitions, something they have underachieved. If he wants challenges, there’s plenty for him.
