Alan Brazil taunts Ally McCoist with cheeky penalty remark live on air

TalkSport host and Celtic fan Alan Brazil poked fun at Rangers legend Ally McCoist live on-air ahead of the Gers’ Europa League trip to Brondby.

Gers travel to the Danish champions in a fixture that could determine their progression to the knockout phase in the competition. Rangers currently sit third in Group A, one point behind second-placed Sparta Prague.

When discussing the importance of Thursday night’s fixture for the Scottish champions, as quoted by the Daily Record, McCoist was unhesitating in his response: “I think they will win, I think they will get the result.”

Although, Brazil was more concerned about fishing for a reaction from his colleague. The ex-Manchester United striker replied: “What price on a Rangers penalty?”

Laughing off the quick remark, McCoist quickly tuned to matters regarding Celtic’s clash with Ferencvaros, although Brazil was having none of it and instead said: “I’m not interested. Old Firm game, Parkhead, that’s the one.”

Contentious penalties

The recent award of penalties against St Mirren and Aberdeen have filled out a lot of newspaper inches in recent weeks.

A soft spot-kick was awarded against Aberdeen which James Tavernier converted in order to rescue a point in that game. That was after Kemar Roofe converted from 12 yards in Rangers’ victory over St Mirren, following a very contentious foul on Ianis Hagi.

Nevertheless, what’s done is done. And Rangers currently proudly occupy the summit of the Scottish Premiership, earning some hard-fought – if not fortuitous – results to sit four points clear of bitter rivals Celtic.

For now, though, attention must be turned to European matters. It’s no secret how important European football is to the two giants of Scottish football, and to follow a season of invincibility with a Europa League group stage exit would be a monumental letdown.

Sparta Prague have to travel to Lyon on Thursday evening, likely leaving the door to second spot open to Rangers. A win at Brondby would likely be enough to leapfrog Sparta in Group A and give them the upper hand heading into what will be a crunch clash against their Czech counterparts on matchday five.
