Sky Sports anger fans with lack of Scottish Premiership coverage
Fans are fuming at Sky Sports’ non-coverage of the Premiership after Rangers clash with Aberdeen was snubbed, according to Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan.
The 2-2 draw at Ibrox on Wednesday took on added significance following the death of Rangers legend Walter Smith, but the broadcaster ignored the game despite securing sole control of the rights last season.
It is believed in some quarters that Sky Sports are only interested in the Old Firm games, but some reckon they only secured rights for the Scottish top-flight in order to prevent a competitor from screening it.
However, Sky say they have a maximum allowance on home games and need to ensure they have a balance remaining for the crucial title run-in and relegation deciders.
With English sides playing the League Cup last-16 midweek, the broadcaster also insisted the Rangers and Celtic’s game against Hibs were up against those premium fixtures down south.
They will show three midweek matches in three days at the end of November and start of December.
Understandably
Fans want to watch their team on TV if they are not able to attend live games, and Rangers supporters would not have been pleased to miss out on the Dons clash.
Sky Sports showed 41 of a possible 48 matches last year, and it is only normal for them to cherry-pick the games they deem crucial.
With English Cup games also running simultaneously, the Premiership became less important to them, and that would have hurt the fans.
Hopefully, another broadcaster will give them a run for their money once their current deal ends as Rangers fans deserve better.
Every game is important this term, and no one wants to miss any fixture.
With Celtic just four points behind Steven Gerrard’s side after 12 games and following a poor start to the campaign, everyone wants to be keeping an eye on both teams, and Sky need to do better.
Rangers fans and their counterparts should expect to miss more games on TV going forward this term, though, but that will not be taking the excitement away from what promises to be a fierce title challenge between the Old Firm rivals.
