Peter Martin impressed by Tavernier’s Ronaldo-esque goal v Motherwell
Rangers skipper James Tavernier put in an impressive shift during his side’s 6-1 win over Motherwell on Sunday, scoring once and weighing in with two assists.
The right-back stroked in a superb volley to draw his side level after Calvin Bassey was allowed to swing a high ball towards him at the back post.
Peter Martin was blown by Tavernier’s strike, comparing it with the one Cristiano Ronaldo scored for Manchester United during Sunday’s 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
The pundit said on PLZ Soccer (as shown on their official Twitter account): “At the weekend, I watched Ronaldo’s goal for Manchester United against Tottenham, and the technique…he’s looking and thinking “I’m going to concentrate on the ball. I don’t care if the man is possibly going to head this. I’ll just keep my eye on the ball”, and his technique, and he goes through it and gets it to the back of the net.
“Tavernier, similar. You could see him watch the ball, and his technique was absolutely superb, and I thought he had a great game because he was at the heart of creating other goals for Rangers as well.”
Incredible
Tavernier would have deservedly won the man of the match award had Fashion Sakala not bagged a hat-trick.
He was in fine form as Rangers sent a message to the rest of the league with a dominant display at Fir Park, and it is no surprise that he gets linked to clubs down south every transfer window.
The right-back has now scored three goals and assisted seven others in 10 Premiership games this term, and he is without a doubt the best in his position in the league.
He took his goal well, and he is a quality finisher in the final third given his impressive record in front of goal.
Rangers are looking to defend their title, and that is definitely possible with someone of such quality.
He was linked with Manchester United in the summer [90min], and playing alongside Ronaldo would definitely be a huge accomplishment.
