Dean Windass: Gerrard will snub Newcastle to remain at Rangers

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been linked with the Newcastle job, but Dean Windass does not see him leaving Ibrox anytime soon.

The Liverpool hero dreams of managing in the Premier League one day, with many tipping him to take charge of his old club in the near future.

Windass is confident Gerrard would succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield and snub the chance to join Newcastle should he be approached to replace Steve Bruce.

Rangers

The Sky Sports pundit told This is Futbol: “I think Steven obviously will be the next Liverpool manager.

“Listen, we’ve always spoken about Glasgow Rangers winning the league last year with no supporters. It will be harder this year with the supporters because obviously, there’s more pressure.

“So, I think Steven will want to finish that project. I think he’ll want to win the league in front of the fifty thousand supporters at Ibrox.”

Fair enough

Rangers know they cannot hold on to Gerrard forever, and his days at Ibrox are numbered after almost four years in charge.

Newcastle now boast of the wealthiest owners on the planet, and should they wait until the end of the campaign before appointing a permanent manager, many believe the Bears boss could be tempted.

Chris Sutton has also suggested on BBC 5 Live Sport that the 41-year-old would jump at the chance to manage Aston Villa if he was offered the job.

Dean Smith is under growing pressure after four straight defeats in the Premier League, and the Rangers boss will definitely be discussed by the media should he get fired.

Rangers

As Windass pointed out, Gerrard is likely to be keen to bide his time and wait for the Liverpool gig, though, which makes a lot of sense.

He could be willing to spend the next two or three seasons at Ibrox in order to win more domestic silverware and get them back into the Champions League, and it does not appear that he would be tempted by the Newcastle job.
