Darrell Currie silenced by James Tavernier in Rangers clash v Motherwell
Darrell Currie was made to eat his words on Sunday when James Tavernier proved why Steven Gerrard started the Rangers captain in the 6-1 win against Motherwell.
Bevis Mugabe’s goal put the Steelmen ahead at Fir Park as the Gers struggled to get into gear in the first half.
That led to Currie posting on his Twitter account to say: “Motherwell very organised and defending well – Mugabi excellent so far.
“As for Rangers – can’t understand why there’s no place for [Nathan] Patterson in this side. [Joe] Aribo seems to be the only spark.”
Almost as soon as the BT Sport host tweeted that, Tavernier smashed in a superb volley.
The Gers right-back then assisted Fashion Sakala’s goal to put the Scottish Premiership leaders 2-1 ahead at half-time.
Currie then added a bit more about Patterson, suggesting Gerrard may need to work a way for both the 19-year-old and Tavernier to play.
He said: “Just think he’s too good to be on bench. Find room for both?”
At least Currie saw the funny side of it, adding: “Timing is everything, eh?”
Knee-jerk
Here’s why you shouldn’t tweet or speak too soon while matches are in play because Currie here has been made to eat his words
Tavernier has defensive weaknesses but going forward, who is arguably the most dangerous attacking player in Scottish football.
No Rangers fan needs to be reminded about Tav’s record in front of goal and also his assist tally from last season but the right-back is starting to find his stride going forward for the Gers.
He did it earlier in the week as we came from behind to draw 2-2 with Aberdeen and turned the game against Motherwell on it’s head almost single handedly.
Tavernier’s ability to cross the ball and also his sweet striking skill makes him a major threat and due to his position, he’s often not picked up by opposition defenders.
We would love to see more of Patterson but it’s so hard to justify dropping Tavernier when he’s just so important to the team.
