Steven Gerrard reacts to Michael Beale’s links to Cardiff City

Rangers first-team coach Michael Beale has been linked with the vacant managerial seat at Cardiff City, and Steven Gerrard is not surprised given his quality.

According to BBC Sport Wales journalist Rob Phillips, the 41-year-old is one of the candidates the English Championship side are looking at in their bid to find the perfect replacement for Mick McCarthy.

Gerrard was asked during Friday’s press conference ahead of the Motherwell clash what he knows about the speculations, and the Bears manager was full of praises for Beale, as relayed on the club’s official Twitter account.

Rangers

“Not to my knowledge has there been any approach (from Cardiff),” the Rangers boss said.

“I have been with Michael all morning and he hasn’t mentioned it from a personal point of view and the club haven’t brought it to me. So I assume it’s speculation at the moment.

“In terms of do I think Cardiff would be interested in Michael Beale and other teams for that matter? One hundred per cent, because he’s top at his job.”

Top man

Rangers TV commentator Clive Tyldesley revealed earlier this month that he hears a lot of complimentary things about Beale when he bumps into managers and coaches down south [Football Scotland], and it is not a surprise that some are recommending him for the Cardiff job.

The chance to become the main man and potentially guide the side to the Premier League is tempting, but it appears the Rangers coach is not keen on the job.

He has not discussed it with Gerrard and the Ibrox club have clearly not been approached by the 1926-27 FA Cup winners.

While Beale joining the Welsh outfit does not seem to be on the cards, the rumours indicate that he is undoubtedly being watched in England, and he could be getting linked to jobs down south frequently going forward.

Rangers

He has been a key member of Gerrard’s backroom staff at Rangers, and losing him right now will be a blow.

However, his Ibrox exit could be a matter of “when” and not “if” as he is clearly a wanted man.
