Chris Sutton reacts to late Rangers penalty controversy v Aberdeen

Chris Sutton has hit out at the penalty Rangers were awarded late on in their 2-2 draw with Aberdeen on Wednesday.

John Beaton felt David Bates had fouled Fashion Sakala in the penalty area at Ibrox, allowing James Tavernier to step up to the spot and complete Rangers’ comeback after going two goals down.

While BBC Sportscene was airing the highlights on Wednesday night, Sutton took to Twitter as soon as the penalty incident was shown.

Writing via his personal Twitter account, it’s clear the former Celtic striker wasn’t happy with Beaton’s decision.

“That’s the worst I’ve seen,” he said.

We got lucky

If that was awarded against us or for any other team in the Scottish Premiership, we’d be laughing at how bad a decision it was by the referee.

Let’s forget our allegiances for one moment and look at that decision properly. When you do that, you can see it’s definitely not a penalty.

Even Kris Boyd on Sky Sports and Richard Foster on BBC Sportsound on Wednesday night thought it was a soft call by Beaton.

It was definitely soft and when Sakala went down next to Bates, the Aberdeen defender was barely touching him.

We’ve got massively lucky there and if that wasn’t awarded, there would not be too many complaints.

Rangers didn’t deserve any points on Wednesday night, unfortunately.

It was yet another disappointing performance by Steven Gerrard’s men, who are still struggling to find their stride despite it being almost November.

Our position at the top of the Premiership table isn’t looking as great right now, with just two points separating us and second-placed Celtic.

Things need to improve as soon as possible.
