Brian Laudrup: Morelos has to win more trophies to become Rangers legend

Alfredo Morelos joined the 100-goal club at the weekend after bagging the winner as Rangers secured a 2-1 win over St. Mirren at Paisley.

While the achievement is a huge one having reached the milestone after 199 games, Bears hero Brian Laudrup insists the Colombian international striker, 25, has a lot to do if he wants to establish himself as a club legend.

Morelos has won just the Scottish Premiership with Rangers since joining from HJK in the summer of 2017, and the former forward, who won five trophies in four seasons at Ibrox, reckons only more silverware makes him earn the legendary status.

Danish pundit Laudrup told Scottish Daily Mail: “I know Alfredo Morelos may not be that comfortable with his English, but it would have been great if he had come out and spoken on Sunday afternoon.

“I’d have liked to hear him say that reaching 100 goals for Rangers was an excellent feat, but that he wanted to win more trophies. Because that’s what it is now about for Morelos. Make no mistake.

“The ‘but’, right now, relates to the fact that it is his only trophy. If he wants to elevate himself into another category of Rangers player then he needs to do what he can to get more prizes beside his name over the next season or two, that’s for sure.

“Look at some of the players who are beside him in the 100-goal club at Ibrox. Ally McCoist’s list of honours was just incredible and it’s perhaps unfair to compare him to anyone.

“But there are also players from the more modern era such as Kenny Miller and Kris Boyd, who had multiple trophies on their CVs by the time they left Rangers. At the end of the day, fair or unfair, you are judged by the titles you win when you play for one of the very top teams in a league.

“For Morelos, one trophy in four years isn’t yet good enough to put him alongside those players I just mentioned. That’s the big challenge ahead for the 25-year-old and it’s one I hope he really wants to take on to help Rangers as a team.”

Fair enough

Morelos is an Ibrox hero without any iota of doubt, but it is understandable if not everyone sees him as a legend yet.

Making almost 200 appearances and scoring 100 goals are monumental feats, but they have yielded just a piece of silverware, and that is not particularly mind-blowing.

He has not helped the club return to the Champions League despite all his goals, and that does not count for much.

He has missed a couple of chances on several occasions to help his side win more trophies in the past or reach a final, and he has to right that wrong.

Winning more silverware is the only way to do that. Fans love Morelos to bits, but they will adore him more should he win them trophies.

He has done well to score all those goals for the Light Blues, but he needs to do more and establish himself as a key player for Colombia ahead of the World Cup.

He will see his value skyrocket should he play a big role for his country at the tournament, and that could see him earn the big move he has always craved and fetch the club top dollar.
