Derek McInnes: Gerrard is happy being linked with Newcastle job

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been constantly linked with the Newcastle United job, and Derek McInnes reckons he would be pleased with the development.

The Liverpool legend dreams of managing his old club someday, and while he insists he remains happy at Ibrox amid links with the Magpies, the former Aberdeen manager believes the chance to move to the Premier League now is tempting.

McInnes reckons managing an English top-flight side before going on to manage Liverpool could be the best step, though, but he believes it would take a big job to lure him away from Rangers at the moment.

The BBC pundit told The Scottish Mail: “Being linked with the Newcastle United job is doing Steven Gerrard no harm.

“And there was a real playfulness about the Rangers manager as he fielded a post-match query in relation to the St James’ Park vacancy on Thursday night

“The smile on his face suggested he was happy to be asked the ‘silly question’ regarding his future.”

Dilemma?

Being linked with the club with the richest owners in the world means Gerrard is doing a good job, and it is only normal for him to be happy about that.

It does not necessarily mean he wants the job, but being recognised for a job well done at Rangers is, without a doubt, a great feeling.

With a lot still to be accomplished at Ibrox, the 41-year-old is not likely to be looking to leave anytime soon.

Rangers

Should Liverpool come calling right now, that definitely will be a different story entirely, but Newcastle are not the biggest club in England despite their new ownership status.

Rangers are eyeing complete domestic dominance and a place in the group stages of the Champions League, and until he wins the treble and takes his side to Europe’s elite competition, leaving the Bears might remain off the cards for Gerrard.

He needs all the experience he can garner before moving on to the biggest league on the planet, and the Light Blues will be happy to keep him for as long as they can.

In other Rangers news, Bears fans will be buzzing with major Jim White-talkSPORT update on Thursday.
