Steven Gerrard not yet cut out for Newcastle United job despite Rangers title – Simon Jordan

TalkSPORT host Simon Jordan has rubbished the notion that Steven Gerrard is ready to quit Rangers and take over at Newcastle United.

Earlier this week, the Magpies sacked manager Steve Bruce in the first major decision by the new Saudi-backed board.

Gerrard has been linked with replacing Bruce in the St James’ Park dug-out with the Northern Echo reporting that the Liverpool legend is interested in the job.

The Times reports Gerrard is under consideration for the Newcastle vacancy as has the support of the boardroom at St James’.

However, ex-Crystal Palace owner Jordan doesn’t feel Gerrard is suited to a job of that prestige in the Premier League.

“Steven Gerrard has obviously gone up to Scotland with Rangers and broken the dynasty Celtic had of nine years of success, on the cusp of doing 10,” said Jordan, as shown in a clip on the talkSPORT Twitter account.

“Do I think that qualifies him to manage in the Premier League? No, I don’t. Not yet.

“I think the league in Scotland is a certain quality and I’m not going to veer into being disrespectful about it but I saw the most recent Old Firm derby myself [and] the quality wasn’t there.

“I think he’s learning his trade, I think he’s overcome the obstacles at the same time there’s been a descent at Celtic.

“Whilst there’s a lot of noise around Steven Gerrard, I think he’s got a long way to go before he gets a high-end Premier League club.”

He’s ready – we just want him to stay

Gerrard has shown in his time at Ibrox that he’s good enough to manage in the Premier League.

If you have managers like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United and Mikel Arteta at Arsenal then you should be able to have Gerrard at a relegation contender like Newcastle.

Gerrard has been linked with taking charge at Liverpool once Jurgen Klopp packs it in at Anfield.

If that’s the case then Jordan is spouting absolute nonsense.

Why is he only looking at Gerrard’s achievements in the Scottish Premiership? Why is his record in Europe ignored?

Gerrard has taken Rangers to the Europa League’s last-16 in back-to-back seasons and secured some mightly impressive results on the way.

The Gers are not only the best team in Scotland now, thanks to Gerrard, but they are also a team that no one really wants to come up against in the Europa League.

Newcastle could be in the Championship next season, let that sink in.

Of course Gerrard’s good enough for them but do we want him to go? Absolutely not.

In other Rangers news, this Gers star has been ruled out of the clash against St Mirren on Sunday.
