Richard Foster: Rangers deserved pen v Brondby

Rangers deserved a penalty for a foul committed in the second half on Joe Aribo, claims Richard Foster.

The former Gers defender was the pundit on BBC’s live feed for the 2-0 win over Brondby last night.

In the 57th minute, Aribo was brought down due to an outstretched leg, and despite VAR having a closer look, they deemed that it wasn’t a clear and obvious error to reverse the referee’s decision.

Foster said of the controversial incident, “I’m bewildered. That’s an easier decision to get right than Roofe’s goal. Aribo is brought down by the defender’s leg. It’s a penalty.”

Strange decision

Aribo was clearly brought down by the opposition player and even in real time that seemed like a pen.

We thought that once a panel of referees has a look the decision would have been reversed as that’s precisely why the VAR was in place.

However, to our amusement, much like Foster’s they did not believe that it was a penalty.

Had it cost Gers the three points, Steven Gerrard would’ve been absolutely fuming as he should have.

But it did not affect the outcome of the game and the Ibrox giants finally got their first Europa League win of the season.

Hopefully, this springboards them into winning another couple of matches and ensuring that they qualify for the Round of 16 either as winners or runners-up.

Beating Lyon is going to be a challenge, but this side has overcome hurdles far greater than that and we’re confident of them getting the right result against the Ligue 1 side.
