The Athletic: Steven Gerrard still in wider pool for Newcastle job after Steve Bruce exit

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is still in a wider pool of managers on the shortlist to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle.

The Premier League side parted ways with the experienced boss on Wednesday morning, sparking the search for the one to take them forward after the takeover.

The Athletic have shared the latest on the manager search, with Gerrard mooted alongside Eddie Howe and Lucien Favre.

Writing on their live blog for Wednesday, The Athletic shared the latest on the manager search at St James’ Park.

“There have been a whole host of names linked and each element of the consortium has submitted their own shortlist of potential candidates, with the debate now taking place as to which direction Newcastle will head,” they wrote.

“Eddie Howe, formerly of Bournemouth, Lucien Favre, who last coached Borussia Dortmund in 2020, and Steven Gerrard, the Rangers manager, are believed to be amongst a wider pool of managers discussed.

“Top-level experience, preferably in England, or in Europe, is understood to be desired.”

No worries.

Despite Bruce finally being shown the exit door, we don’t expect Gerrard to be the one who replaces him at St James’ Park.

The former Liverpool man will eventually manage in the Premier League, with Anfield surely waiting in his future after Jurgen Klopp moves on.

Tom English of the BBC recently suggested that Gerrard should have been wearing a Newcastle shirt when commenting on the takeover in a press conference, although he usually isn’t far from poking the bear.

Given that the Magpies are desiring top-level experience in England as a preference, Gerrard may find himself slipping down the list.

It is one thing doing it as a player, but given the huge money being thrown at the club, we expect they want a manager who has been there and done it.

What a shame – sarcasm, of course.
