Graeme Souness tells Steven Gerrard to stay at Rangers and not join Newcastle

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness has told Steven Gerrard to stay at Rangers and not join Newcastle United.

The Gers boss has emerged as one of the top candidates to take over from Steve Bruce on Tyneside, but Souness wants him to stay at Ibrox [The Times].

Speaking to Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, the former Liverpool midfielder told him to wait to take over from Jurgen Klopp rather than risk it all by joining Newcastle.

Rangers

He said: “I don’t think it’s one he should go near.

“My advice to him would be to stay where he is.

“Although he has been in the Rangers job for three years, he’ll realise that’s a short time in management.

“He’s still learning after three years – but he’ll still be learning after 23 years.

“I think he should wait, and he will wait, for the Liverpool job. It’s inevitable he’ll get offered it.

“I don’t think there’s any lure at Newcastle – and when you look at the human rights aspect, I would find it hard to go and work for that club again with the new owners.

“I wouldn’t do it. I just would not do it.”

Bold and strong stuff from Souness.

So, it doesn’t seem as if Souness is the biggest fan of Newcastle, which isn’t too surprising given that his managerial career ended after a disastrous spell as manager there.

The 68-year-old, though, is adamant that he doesn’t want to see Gerrard swap Glasgow for Newcastle.

We can’t see why he would leave this potential dynasty that he is building to join a club deep in a relegation fight.

If he went there and it all went wrong, then where does he go?

Rangers

Staying with the Gers is definitely the sensible thing to do, and it is clear that Souness can see him getting the Liverpool job when the time is right, which will probably be when Jurgen Klopp’s contract expires.

So, it will be interesting to see if the Toon make an approach, but we hope that even if they do, Gerrard stays with the Bears.
