Steven Gerrard among leading contenders for Newcastle job, Rangers boss supported by board
Newcastle United will ramp up their efforts to replace Steve Bruce this week and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is a leading candidate, according to The Times.
The newspaper reports that Roberto Martinez and Unai Emery are also in the frame to succeed Bruce, who will be sacked and paid an £8million compensation fee as soon as a replacement is found.
It is understood that Gerrard has the support of the new Newcastle board after their £300million takeover by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund earlier this month.

Hands off
Gerrard has done a wonderful job at Ibrox, turning Rangers from a laughing stock into the most powerful and most feared team in Scotland.
Not only did he win us the Scottish Premiership title last season but he also stopped Celtic winning their 10th title in a row, humiliated our Old Firm rivals and did so without suffering a single league defeat.
He’s also twice taken us to the last-16 of the Europa League, which is a massive achievement given Celtic’s shortcomings in European football during their domination years in Scotland.
Gerrard has shown he’s able to keep a team defensively solid, make decent signings on a restricted budget and get players linking up well and firing on all cylinders in the attack.
Let’s admit it, Gerrard would be a massive upgrade on Bruce for Newcastle fans but we really hope the world’s new richest club keeps their hands off the former Liverpool midfielder.
Gerrard is becoming a club legend at Ibrox and currently has his team top of the Premiership again as he seeks to defend the title won last season.
We cannot let all his hard work go to waste. We have to get him tied down to a new contract to ward off interest from Newcastle and possible other clubs in the future.
