Danny Murphy doesn’t see Steven Gerrard leaving Rangers for Newcastle

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been linked with the Newcastle United job, and the stories are not going to go away anytime soon.

The 41-year-old dreams of managing his boyhood club Liverpool someday, and Danny Murphy does not see him risking his chances of becoming the Red boss by taking on the Magpies job.

Newcastle are presently one of the favourites to get relegated despite their takeover, and the talkSPORT pundit reckons the Rangers manager will want to steer clear.

Rangers

Jim White was quick to remind Murphy that the Liverpool job could be years away from happening, but the latter insists nothing can be ruled out.

Murphy said on talkSPORT (as shared on their Twitter account): “There’s a couple of aspects to this one.

“The first one is the loyalty to Rangers should be there in some respect because of the platform they gave him when it was a risk.

“A massive club like Rangers decided to take a risk on Stevie and it has worked both ways.

“But there is a degree of loyalty needing to be shown back and I’m sure he feels that way.

“There’s more success coming at Rangers, they look like the dominant team in Scotland.

“I think the bit he wouldn’t say, and I haven’t spoken to him, is he’ll be thinking it’ll be a hell of a risk with this Newcastle team at this stage.

“And furthermore, his ultimate aim is to manage Liverpool Football Club.

“Now, if he goes to Newcastle and messes it up, he might just jeopardise that opportunity and he’s not going to do that.

White cuts in, asking: “But Liverpool is not going to happen for a long time, is it?”

Murphy replied: “Jim you know football. Things can happen quickly, things change quickly for whatever reason. Stevie is not going to jeopardise that foundation he is already built. He is winning things, he is successful at Rangers. Why leave and maybe take Newcastle down. Why would he take the risk?”

Tricky

Gerrard is not likely going to turn down the chance of managing in the Premier League if he is approached, and the new owners at St. James’ Park have the cash to splash.

Walking out on Rangers with the campaign ongoing is going to be extremely difficult for him, though.

There is a title to defend and some domestic silverware to fight for, so it is hard to see him pulling a Brendan Rodgers on his Ibrox employers.

Rangers

However, an exit during the close season is possible if Newcastle are still in the Premier League and in need of a manager by then.

As White pointed out, the Liverpool gig is not coming anytime despite Murphy’s argument, and while Rangers do not want their manager gone yet, things could be different this summer if the new moneybags down South come calling.

It will be interesting to see how things go, but Gerrard will not be with the Bears forever, and an exit could be imminent.

In other Rangers news, a Sky Sports pundit has suggested that Bears man will join PL side should offer arrive.
