Dermot Gallagher: Ryan Porteous was deservedly sent off vs Rangers
Rangers secured a 2-1 win over 10-man Hibernian on Sunday at Ibrox, and the decision to send off Ryan Porteous has sparked debates.
Referee Nick Walsh showed the defender a straight red card after a challenge on Joe Aribo in the closing stages of the first-half, but replay showed he won the ball.
Many have questioned the call, insisting the Hibs star deserved a yellow at worst, but former Premier League ref Dermot Gallagher says Walsh was spot on.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, he said: “When you look at it, he’s gone over the top of the ball. He’s lucky he didn’t catch the man as badly as he could’ve done.
“When you see where his leg is and the speed he went at, it’s a red card.”
Gallagher spent 17 years as a ref in the best league in the world, and his opinion on this matter definitely carries a lot of weight.
Porteous got the ball, but his intent and aggression gave Walsh no chance.
It was a leg breaker and the sending off had nothing to do with it being against a Rangers player.
There was no conspiracy involved, and the ref got this one spot on.
Hibs fans will not agree with the former Premier League ref, but only one person’s opinion matters more in all of these, and he has delivered his verdict.
Had it happened in the English top-flight, VAR would have helped Walsh make a well-informed decision.
While a red card would have most likely still been produced, having the benefits of a replay would have helped clear things up.
Rangers won the game fair and square, but things might have been different had the Hibs star remained on the pitch.
Steven Gerrard’s side were lucky the ref made the right call, but that will not always happen, and they need to learn how to comfortably win games against 11 men.
