Steven Gerrard confirms Connor Goldson is fit v Lyon
Steven Gerrard has handed Rangers a major boost by confirming Connor Goldson’s availability against Lyon.
Gers kick-start their Europa League with a tricky fixture against the Ligue 1 side and were sweating on the fitness of one of their best defenders.
Having missed the game against St. Johnstone, it was touch and go for the 28-year-old ahead of this clash, but Gerrard has stated that he is available for selection.
He said, via the official Rangers Twitter handle, “Connor Goldson comes back and is available for tomorrow, I am confident we have cover and will manage despite being disappointed Filip is missing.”
With Filip Helander and Jack Simpson missing, Gerrard would’ve been in a bigger lurch if he did not have Goldson available.
He is one of his most reliable custodians and not having his services to count on would mean he would have to reshuffle the pack.
There were talks about Calvin Bassey being played out of position at centre-back as well, but given Goldson’s availability, that’s not likely to happen now.
Goldson has been impressing fans and experts alike, with Andy Walker labelling him “magnificent” on Sky Sports on August 6.
Despite injuries elsewhere, there are no excuses for Rangers to not win this game.
Even though Lyon are the toughest side in their group, they’ve made the Ibrox a fortress in the past, and it’s time that they count on their support for this European clash.
The Glasgow outfit must not tolerate anything less than a win.
