David Tanner waxes lyrical of Nathan Patterson during Scotland v Moldova game
Rangers defender Nathan Patterson impressed talkSPORT presenter David Tanner as Scotland beat Moldova 1-0 on Saturday night.
It was a comfortable victory, as many expected for the Scottish side, as they brushed apart their lower-ranked opponents with ease at Hampden Park.
Patterson, despite not registering an assist, was one player that stood out as his bursting runs from right wing-back kept the opposition defenders at bay all game.
Via his personal Twitter account, Tanner wrote, “This is why young Nathan Patterson got the nod over Stephen O’Donnell at right back for this particular game. Sensational energy in attack.”
There were calls even before Euro 2020 for Patterson to start over O’Donnell for Scotland and now they’re certainly going to be getting louder.
At 19, Patterson has proven he’s the country’s best right-back and given how he’s progressed in the last two years, he’s only going to get better in the coming years.
It was a major coup for Rangers that he did not leave for Everton as players his age and even in their mid-20s are tempted to move to the Premier League.
He’s at Ibrox and we’re sure he’s going to fight a lot harder to make that right-back spot his own ahead of James Tavernier.
Steven Gerrard will love this kind of competition as the two will only push each other to get better.
Alternatively, both could be deployed in the same team, but it remains to be seen what Gerrard’s plans are for the coming months.
