Ally McCoist slams Ryan Kent in first half of Rangers v Celtic clash
Ally McCoist was aghast at Rangers winger Ryan Kent during the first half of Sunday’s clash against Celtic at Ibrox.
Kent, 24, was back in the Rangers starting XI after missing Thursday’s Europa League qualifier against Alashkert due to a positive COVID-19 case.
He lined up alongside Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe in the Gers attack, but it was his movements the other way that caused concern for Light Blues legend McCoist during commentary on Sky Sports [29/08/21].
“Shocking defending Ryan Kent, absolutely shocking not going with your man,” McCoist said.
“Very poor defending.”
Back to action
Kent was sloppy in the opening stages of the half as he came back into the side after spending a short while in isolation during the week.
With a number of first-team stars still ruled out due to the outbreak, Kent’s return was very welcome, even if he has failed to hit his previous heights so far this season.
However, while he was lively from the off, there were moments where it looked like he had spent a lot longer than a few days in isolation.
There was a moment early on where he looked electric as he went to take the Celtic defence on down the Rangers right-hand side.
However, there were moments of indecision as despite beating his man, he dallied on the ball and ended up taking it out of the pitch for a goal-kick.
He was also culpable for some dodgy defending, as alluded to by McCoist.
The Gers managed to get away with that as Celtic failed to profit on a chance, but it was another reminder for Kent to wake up and assert himself in the first Old Firm of the season.
