Ally McCoist expects Rangers to win Old Firm derby 2-1
Rangers host Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the 2021-22 season at Ibrox on Sunday, and Ally McCoist is expecting a keenly contested clash.
Steven Gerrard’s men ended last season without a defeat in the Scottish Premiership, dominating the campaign from start to finish and winning three of their league games against the Hoops.
While Celtic have been a different team under Ange Postecoglou, Rangers will fancy their chances, being at home and playing in front of full capacity crowd.
McCoist is predicting his old side to narrowly edge out the visitors despite their impressive goalscoring form.
“Prediction for the Old Firm derby, it’s a difficult one because it’s the first derby of the season,” the Rangers legend told talkSPORT (as shown on their official YouTube channel).
“Both sides having started particularly well to be honest with you.
“Celtic have been scoring a lot of goals. However, I think Rangers will win 2-1 in a tight affair.”
The Bears have already suffered a defeat this season despite going all season without one last term, and Celtic will be smelling blood.
Despite starting the new season with a loss to Hearts, they have scored six goals in each of their next two league games, and Thursday’s 2-1 loss to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League qualifiers would not have had any effect on them as they still qualified for the group stages on aggregate.
Rangers will be looking to make a statement with victory at Ibrox tomorrow, but they will need to do better defensively.
Their squad is currently depleted due to some positive coronavirus tests, and missing Gerrard on the touchline and some of their key players will surely have a huge say on the proceedings.
Nevertheless, Rangers boast of quality squad depth and will be hoping those available can get the job done.
They need to avoid defeat against Celtic, and a victory will surely send a message to everyone that they remain the team to beat in the land.
