Tom English reacts as Rangers sign Juninho Bacuna from Huddersfield

BBC Scotland journalist Tom English has tipped players to leave Rangers before the transfer window closes following the arrival of Juninho Bacuna from Huddersfield on Thursday.

Ahead of the Gers’ 1-0 win against Alshkert, the addition of Bacuna, 24, to Steven Gerrard’s squad was announced.

The Dutchman was even presented to fans during half-time at Ibrox.

Speaking about Bacuna on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound on Thursday night [7:30pm], English said: “He’s a creative-type player in the middle of the park, attacking midfielder.

“We’ll see but they’re not short. You look at all of the squad of players they have, I cannot believe in a couple of weeks time these players will still be at the club because it’s a battalion.”

BBC Radio Scotland host Richard Gordon then discussed with English whether he’s heard of what fee it took to sign Bacuna. English hasn’t heard of a fee and asked Gordon what he seen and Gordon said: “Anything from about £1million to £7million, I’ve seen in various reports.”

English replied: “£7million?”

Gordon responded by saying: “I saw that a few times. Let’s be honest, if you scroll down far enough you will see £7million, won’t you?”

It may be time to sell up

We’ve seen a lot of Rangers fans rubbishing the notion that players need to be sold this summer and that may have been the case if we made the Champions League group stages.

However, we are set for another season in the Europa League and while gate receipts will obviously be higher than last term, the Gers are unlikely to be able to make up the £15million loss of the last financial year without sales.

Last December, managing Stewart Robertson suggested that the club will need to start selling players each summer in order to build a sustainable business model [FourFourTwo].

That’s not the ‘media selling our players’. That is literally one of the highest-up people at Ibrox saying that openly in an AGM.

Bacuna is an attacking midfielder who can also play on the right or as a forward but we do already have players who can play in those roles like Ianis Hagi, Joe Aribo and Scott Wright.

Is one of them going to be sold off? At the moment, as English says, our squad is starting to look very bloated.

And if we did pay £7million for Bacuna – that’s a big if – there are definitely going to be one or two players leaving.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have made a multi-million bid to sign “one of the best players” in a European league.
